Since 2005, the number of wood burners sold in the UK has risen to a massive 140,000 per year and with the combined effect of the Credit Crunch, sales during 2008 rose by a further 36 per cent to 190,000 per year.

A combination of increasing fossil fuel prices and the effects of the Credit Crunch has seen an enormous increase in the number of people installing wood burning stoves in recent years.

The increase in demand for stoves has been coupled with an increase for good quality, sustainable wood fuel.

With demand at an all-time high, and with recent media coverage of the concerns that burning wood could add to problems of deforestation and increased greenhouse gases, it is not surprising that many people want to know where they can source a good quality, sustainable wood fuel supply.

Fact:
If wood fuel is sourced properly, burning wood on a stove can be classed as carbon neutral as the CO2 released during the burning process is offset by the amount of CO2 absorbed by trees whilst they are growing.

Fact:
When properly seasoned wood is burned it releases only the same amount of CO2 back into the atmosphere as if the tree was left to rot.

Fact:
Wood quality and moisture content is critical to ensure you are using your stove in an environmentally friendly manner.

Q.  How Can I ensure I'm using my stove in an environmentally friendly manner?

A.  There are three general principles to follow:
   * choose hardwood logs, as these burn more efficiently than soft wood
   * ensure moisture content is kept to a minimum – less that 20% moisture is preferable
   * make sure your wood comes from properly managed, renewable sources.

TIP:  A warning sign that poor quality wood fuel is being used is blackening of the glass on your woodburner or a very smoky fire.
If wood is very wet, you may also hear logs making a sizzling sound whilst they burn.

Fact:  Young, wet, wood not only gives off more emissions – it also causes creosote build-up in chimneys and flues, which is a classic cause of chimney fires.

Fact:  Freshly harvested wood contains a naturally high amount of water – anywhere between 65-90%.

TIP:  In order to prepare wood for burning on a stove, it should be seasoned – air drying which reduces the water content – and this can take up to two years.

To meet the demand for sustainably sourced, dry wood, new sources of kiln dried wood are now springing up around the UK.

Certainly Wood is one such supplier and their wood can be bought locally from Stoveco in Guardbridge.

All fuel is sustainably sourced hardwood and is from British woodland.

Kiln Dried Wood

Kiln dried wood avoids having to season your wood for before burning –as it has been dried to 20% or less moisture content in kilns which are powered by wood waste.

The main benefits of this kiln dried supply are that the wood generates a greater heat output, you will achieve a better fuel efficiency from your stove, it is more economical, and it will cause far fewer stove and flue problems. Kiln dried wood fuel is therefore better for the environment and represents better value for money, too.
